Wired for Tomorrow Initiative Unveiled

Yarra City Council is collaborating with the Yarra Energy Foundation (YEF) on the “Wired for Tomorrow” initiative, aimed at spearheading the transition to all-electric precincts in the Yarra region, paving the way for a zero-carbon future.

The initiative, set to serve as a template for broader electrification efforts, seeks to:

  1. Harness Community Momentum: Leverage existing community support for electrification.
  2. Inspiring Vision: Develop an inspiring vision for a large-scale, all-electric future.
  3. Identify Critical Steps: Outline crucial steps and engage key stakeholders to realize the vision.

Yarra City Council Mayor Emphasizes Strategic Transition

Mayor Edward Crossland highlighted the significance of establishing a clear path toward electrification, emphasizing that the Yarra community benefits from passionate members committed to a thoughtful and strategic electrification plan.

“The Yarra City Council, in partnership with the Yarra Energy Foundation, is laying essential groundwork to understand the challenges and opportunities for transitioning from gas to renewable energy,” stated Mayor Crossland.

Selected Precinct as Model for All-Electric Vision

YEF has designated a precinct within the 3068 postcode as the model for the all-electric vision. This area was chosen for its diverse building types, technological compatibility, and an actively engaged community. Collaboration with local community group Electrify 3068 will play a pivotal role in advancing the electrification vision.

Aligned with Council’s Strategic Plans

The project aligns closely with Yarra City Council’s overarching plans, including the Council Plan, Climate Emergency Plan, and Roadmap to Zero Advisory Report.

Dean Kline, CEO of Yarra Energy Foundation, emphasized the magnitude of transitioning Yarra to an all-electric precinct and underscored the importance of community engagement. Through the Wired for Tomorrow initiative, the aim is to build knowledge and support local communities on the journey to all-electric precincts.
