In a groundbreaking move, Xsabo Group’s state-of-the-art Nkonge Solar Plant is set to inject 20 megawatts (MW) into Uganda’s national grid, marking a significant leap for the country’s renewable energy capacity. The ambitious project, valued at Shs 82.6 billion, is strategically located in Kabulasoke at the Nkonge station.
Elevating Uganda’s Solar Portfolio
Financed by a loan from the Uganda Development Bank, this solar plant represents a key development in Uganda’s clean energy landscape, bringing the total grid-connected solar capacity to an impressive 80.6 MW. This addition contributes to the nation’s goal of achieving a sustainable and diversified energy mix.
Innovative Features and Cutting-Edge Technology
Dr. David Alobo, the founder and managing director of Xsabo Group, detailed the plant’s innovative features, including 38,000 bifacial panels and 547 horizontal single-axis solar trackers. These trackers, equipped with an AI system, optimize sun exposure by adjusting the modules’ position throughout the day.
The plant’s advanced technology extends to a self-sufficient meteorological station, ensuring efficient operation by measuring critical weather parameters. Dr. Alobo emphasized the project’s commitment to sustainability and efficiency, showcasing Xsabo Group’s dedication to a low-carbon future.
Economic Efficiency and Government Collaboration
Dr. Sarah Wasagali Kanaabi, chairperson of the Electricity Regulatory Authority, lauded the economic efficiency of the project. The 20MW Xsabo Nkonge power station will sell power to the Ugandan Government at a competitive tariff of US cents 7.1 per kilowatt-hour, positioning it as the most cost-effective solar plant in the country.
The collaboration between Xsabo Group and the Ugandan Government demonstrates a shared commitment to providing clean and affordable energy to citizens. Denis Ochieng, the acting managing director of the Uganda Development Bank, highlighted the bank’s significant role in supporting projects that drive socio-economic development and job creation.
UDB’s Impact on Uganda’s Development
The Uganda Development Bank’s approval of Shs 691 billion to support various projects across the country showcases its dedication to fostering economic growth. The bank’s efforts are projected to create jobs, contribute to tax revenue, and bolster Uganda’s position in the global economy.
This multi-faceted initiative aligns with Uganda’s vision for a sustainable and resilient future, ensuring access to clean energy and economic opportunities for its citizens.
