Introduction to the Project
On March 29th, the “Key Technologies for Ultra-High-Voltage Multi-Terminal DC Transmission of Large-Scale Renewable Energy Bases” under the “14th Five-Year Plan” National Key R&D Program was launched in Hohhot. This project is a major technological endeavor by the country to address the challenges of integrating renewable energy into the Sha’erhao Desert, focusing on key technologies and engineering demonstrations for large-scale, deep development, long-distance transmission, and integration of new energy under specific geographical conditions.
Key Technological Innovations
Addressing the irregular energy supply in the desert, the project aims to develop key technologies and equipment for ±800kV ultra-high-voltage multi-terminal flexible DC engineering. It will also construct long-distance new energy transmission demonstration projects for engineering application verification.
Scope of the Demonstration Project
The demonstration project targets a new energy base in the Sha’erhao Desert with a capacity of over 12 million kilowatts, transmission capacity exceeding 8 million kilowatts, and a transmission distance of over 900 kilometers. It is the world’s largest and most complex multi-terminal DC system, as well as the world’s first ultra-high-voltage flexible DC project powered entirely by renewable energy, opening up a new technological path for large-scale renewable energy development in China and beyond.
Collaborative Efforts and Funding
Led by Inner Mongolia Power Group, the project was approved by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology on November 29, 2023. It involves 14 domestic universities, institutes, enterprises, 4 academician teams, 4 national key laboratories, and 1 national engineering technology center, pooling significant research strengths in the ultra-high-voltage field.
This project is part of the key special project approved under the “Framework Agreement on Joint Organization and Implementation of the National Key R&D Program on Energy Storage and Smart Grid Technology” signed between the Inner Mongolia government and the Ministry of Science and Technology in 2023. With a national allocation of funds reaching 80 million yuan, it leverages over 180 million yuan in enterprise R&D investment.
