World Bank’s $15 Billion Ascent Program: Clean Energy Boost for Tanzania, Rwanda, Somalia, and Sao Tome

Launching the Pilot Phase

Tanzania, Rwanda, Somalia, and Sao Tome and Principe have been selected for the pilot phase of the World Bank’s ambitious Accelerating Sustainable and Clean Energy Access Transformation (Ascent) program. World Bank Group President Ajay Banga revealed this $15 billion initiative during the International Development Association’s mid-term review.

Addressing Energy Poverty Challenges

With only 48% of the overall population and 26% in rural areas having access to electricity in Sub-Saharan Africa, the Ascent program aims to benefit over 100 million people by 2030. At least $5 billion of the funding will come from the International Development Association (IDA), with additional contributions from partners.

Comprehensive Approach for Clean Energy Transition

The Ascent program’s three-pronged strategy involves developing regional and national platforms, expanding grid electrification, and implementing financing strategies. Victoria Kwakwa, the World Bank’s vice-president for Eastern and Southern Africa, emphasized the program’s potential to leverage resources, providing a comprehensive solution to energy access challenges in the region.
