Madison Gas and Electric (MGE) and We Energies celebrate the successful completion of the Badger Hollow Solar Farm, marking Wisconsin’s largest solar project to date. The solar facility, boasting a remarkable 300-megawatt (MW) generating capacity, is located near Montfort and Cobb in Iowa County, Wisconsin.
Milestones in Phases
The project unfolded in two phases, with the second 150-MW phase recently going live, energizing homes and businesses across Wisconsin. The first phase commenced operations in December 2021. The collective 300-MW capacity has the capability to power approximately 90,000 homes, a substantial stride towards sustainable energy in the region.
Cutting-Edge Technology and Winter Efficiency
Badger Hollow Solar Farm incorporates 830,000 solar panels equipped with sun-tracking capabilities, optimizing power generation by following the sun’s trajectory throughout the day. A notable feature is the panels’ ability to capture solar energy on both sides, proving advantageous during winter months when sunlight reflects off snow-covered surfaces.
Collaboration for a Greener Tomorrow
The partnership between MGE and We Energies underscores a commitment to a sustainable future. Jeff Keebler, MGE’s Chairman, President, and CEO, emphasizes the historic collaboration, expressing gratitude for We Energies’ role in achieving the project’s success. The completion of Badger Hollow is a pivotal step in transitioning to cost-effective, carbon-free renewable energy, with a target for MGE customers to witness an 80% reduction in carbon emissions by 2030.
Ownership Structure
The ownership structure of the Badger Hollow Solar Farm is shared between We Energies and MGE. We Energies holds 100 MW of the second phase, with MGE having a 50 MW stake. In the first phase, We Energies’ sister company, Wisconsin Public Service, owns 100 MW, and MGE owns the remaining 50 MW.
