US Urged to Engage in China’s Clean Energy Progress

Experts are calling on the United States to strengthen its collaboration with China in the clean energy sector, emphasizing the importance of this partnership in the face of political and economic tensions. Joanna Lewis, director of the Science, Technology, and International Affairs Program at Georgetown University, highlighted the risks the US might face if it continues to distance itself from China’s advancements in energy storage and electric vehicles.

Importance of US-China Cooperation on Climate Change

During an online discussion hosted by the Center for American Progress, Lewis stressed the necessity of continued US-China engagement on climate issues. She noted that collaboration over the past 30 years has been instrumental in China’s progress in tracking and reducing emissions and promoting a low-carbon energy transition. Despite current geopolitical challenges, Lewis argued that now is the critical time to deepen this cooperation to avoid setbacks in global climate efforts.

Balancing National Security and Innovation

Lewis expressed concerns that the Biden administration’s Inflation Reduction Act, while boosting US competitiveness in clean energy, might have overly restricted Chinese involvement in the sector. She urged for a balanced approach that ensures national security while allowing the US to benefit from China’s innovations in green technology. Lewis advocated for open discussions on trade and research to prevent these issues from undermining joint efforts on climate change.
