TotalEnergies Strengthens Ties with Nigeria, Eliminates Routine Flaring, and Commits to Methane Reduction

Patrick Pouyanné and President Bola Tinubu meet to discuss long-term partnership, investment, and emissions reduction initiatives.

Renewed Partnership and Significant Investments

In a strategic meeting between Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies, and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigeria, the commitment to a lasting partnership was reaffirmed. Over the past decade, TotalEnergies has emerged as Nigeria’s largest private energy investor, contributing significantly to projects like Egina, Ofon Phase 2, OML 58 Upgrade, and the recently initiated Ikike project.

The company possesses an extensive portfolio, indicating potential future investments exceeding $6 billion (100%).

Methane Emissions Reduction and Zero Routine Flaring

TotalEnergies has demonstrated its commitment to environmental responsibility by endorsing the World Bank’s “Zero Routine Flaring by 2030” initiative. As a pioneering move, TotalEnergies, in collaboration with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), successfully concluded the OML 100 Flare Out project in December 2023, marking the complete elimination of routine flaring from all its operated assets in Nigeria.

In a groundbreaking development, TotalEnergies has signed a cooperation agreement with NNPCL for methane detection and measurement campaigns. This initiative will leverage advanced drone-based technology, AUSEA, to monitor Oil & Gas facilities in Nigeria, contributing to the reduction of methane emissions.

Leadership Perspectives and Future Collaboration

Patrick Pouyanné expressed TotalEnergies’ pleasure in announcing the end of routine flaring in Nigerian operations and the sharing of AUSEA technology with NNPCL. He emphasized the commitment to supporting NNPCL in adhering to the Oil & Gas Decarbonization Charter.

The meeting between Pouyanné and President Tinubu also delved into discussions about improving the investment climate, ensuring operational security, and TotalEnergies’ future investment plans in Nigeria.
