TotalEnergies and its partners have initiated the construction of a significant hybrid renewables project in South Africa, featuring a 216 MW solar plant and a 500 MWh battery storage system. The project, located in the Northern Cape province, aims to address the intermittency of solar production through the battery storage system.
Electricity Supply and Power Purchase Agreement
The site is expected to supply dispatchable renewable electricity to the South African national grid for twenty years, providing over 400 GWh annually. A Power Purchase Agreement, signed in November, outlines that the project will deliver 75 MW of dispatchable power to the national utility Eskom continuously from 5 a.m. to 9.30 p.m., exceeding the available sunshine hours.
Project Development and Partnerships
The consortium responsible for the project includes TotalEnergies (35%), Hydra Storage Holding (35%), and a B-BBEE partner, Reatile Renewables (30%). Achieving financial close on December 14, the project anticipates operational status in 2025. The initiative aligns with the Risk Mitigation Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme, addressing electricity supply constraints in South Africa.
Renewable Energy Contribution
Vincent Stoquart, Senior Vice President, Renewables at TotalEnergies, highlighted the project’s contribution to the country’s energy transition and the strengthening of the power system’s resilience. The innovative hybrid design aims to provide continuous green electricity beyond typical sunshine hours.
TotalEnergies and Renewable Portfolio
As part of TotalEnergies’ commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, the company is developing a diverse and cost-competitive portfolio, integrating renewables (solar, onshore and offshore wind) and flexible assets (CCGT, storage). With a target of reaching 35 GW of renewable electricity generation installed capacity by 2025, TotalEnergies aims to contribute over 100 TWh of net electricity production by 2030.
