TotalEnergies and SINOPEC Forge Partnership for Sustainable Aviation Fuel Production

A Groundbreaking Collaboration in Sustainable Aviation

In an exciting development for the aviation and energy sectors, TotalEnergies and China Petroleum and Chemical Corporation (SINOPEC) have signed a Heads of Agreement to establish a Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production unit within a SINOPEC refinery in China. This strategic partnership represents a significant leap forward in the production of eco-friendly jet fuel, with the facility poised to generate 230,000 tons of SAF annually. The initiative will leverage local waste and residues from the circular economy, such as cooking oils and animal fats, aligning with global sustainability goals.

Leveraging Technology and Expertise for Green Energy

SINOPEC’s proprietary SAF production technology, SRJET, combined with TotalEnergies’ extensive experience in SAF production, technical operations, and distribution, underscores the synergistic potential of this partnership. Yongsheng Ma, SINOPEC Group Chairman, emphasized the project’s alignment with the company’s commitment to green and low-carbon energy solutions. Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies, highlighted the collaboration’s importance in structuring a SAF production chain in China and contributing to the aviation industry’s carbon reduction efforts.

TotalEnergies’ Ambitious SAF Production Goals

TotalEnergies is on a mission to become a leader in Sustainable Aviation Fuels, with a target to produce 1.5 million tons of SAF annually by 2030. These biofuels, derived from waste and residues of the circular economy, alongside synthetic “e-jets” fuels, are set to drastically cut CO2 emissions from air travel, marking a pivotal step in the transition towards more sustainable aviation practices.
