TotalEnergies Affirms Long-term Partnership with Nigeria and Takes Steps to Reduce Methane Emissions

Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies, reinforced the enduring collaboration between TotalEnergies and Nigeria during a meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Abuja.

Decade of Significant Investments

TotalEnergies, the largest private energy investor in Nigeria for the past decade, has played a pivotal role in major projects such as Egina, Ofon Phase 2, OML 58 Upgrade, and the recently launched Ikike project in 2022. The company’s long-term commitment is further underscored by ongoing exploration, including the Ntokon discovery in June 2023, with a project portfolio potentially exceeding $6 billion in future investments.

Strengthening Investment Climate and Security

Discussions between Patrick Pouyanné and President Tinubu focused on enhancing the investment climate, operational security, and TotalEnergies’ future investment program in Nigeria. Additionally, efforts to support carbon emissions reduction in Nigeria were addressed.

Zero Routine Flaring and Methane Emission Reduction Initiatives

TotalEnergies, a founding member of the World Bank’s Global Gas Flaring Reduction (GGFR) partnership, has endorsed the “Zero Routine Flaring by 2030” initiative. The company, in collaboration with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), has successfully concluded the OML 100 Flare Out project, making TotalEnergies the first major operator in Nigeria to eliminate routine flaring from all operated assets.

Innovative Methane Detection Agreement

TotalEnergies has signed a cooperation agreement with NNPCL to deploy its advanced drone-based technology, AUSEA, for methane detection and measurement campaigns on Oil & Gas facilities in Nigeria. This initiative aligns with similar agreements signed with national oil and gas companies from Brazil, Azerbaijan, and Angola ahead of COP28.

TotalEnergies in Nigeria and Globally

With a presence in Nigeria for over 60 years, TotalEnergies employs over 1,800 people across various business segments. The company’s hydrocarbon production in Nigeria reached 204,000 boe/d in 2022, and it operates an extensive distribution network with approximately 540 service stations in the country. Globally, TotalEnergies, with over 100,000 employees, is committed to sustainable development and making energy more affordable, reliable, and accessible worldwide.
