TotalEnergies Acquires Stake in OranjeWind Offshore Wind Farm

Advancing Green Energy Policies

TotalEnergies has signed agreements with RWE to acquire a 50% stake in the OranjeWind offshore wind farm in the Netherlands. This 795 MW project will produce renewable electricity dedicated to powering 350 MW electrolyzer projects. These will generate about 40,000 tons of green hydrogen annually, aiding the decarbonization of TotalEnergies’ refineries in Northern Europe.

Decarbonizing Refineries

TotalEnergies plans to cut its European refineries’ hydrogen-related CO₂ emissions by 5 million tons per year by 2030. The company will use its share in OranjeWind to produce green hydrogen via electrolysis, replacing current hydrogen consumption. This shift will prevent approximately 400,000 tons of CO₂ emissions annually. This project aligns with TotalEnergies’ goal to reduce its net greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2030, compared to 2015 levels.

Innovative Offshore Wind Project

Located 53 km off the Dutch coast, the OranjeWind project was secured by RWE in the 2022 Dutch Hollandse Kust West VII tender. RWE committed to developing electrolyzers, a venture now shared with TotalEnergies. Besides green power and hydrogen production, OranjeWind will stabilize the Dutch grid with its electric boilers and battery storage. Construction is set to begin in 2026, with full commissioning expected by early 2028.

Strategic Collaboration

“We are excited to collaborate with RWE, a key player in renewables, to develop green hydrogen production for decarbonizing our northern European refineries,” said Stephane Michel, President Gaz Renewables & Power, and Bernard Pinatel, President, Refining & Chemicals, TotalEnergies. “This innovative project showcases our pioneering role in the energy transition in Europe.”

Sven Utermöhlen, CEO RWE Offshore Wind, added, “The Netherlands is a strategic market for growing our green portfolio. Partnering with TotalEnergies, we will realize our first offshore wind project in the Netherlands and enhance system integration. This collaboration supports the Dutch energy system of the future, tackling intermittent wind generation and flexible energy demand. We are committed to helping the Netherlands meet its decarbonization targets.”
