Next-Generation Lithium-ion Battery Technology

Toshiba, Sojitz, and CBMM have developed a revolutionary lithium-ion battery using niobium titanium oxide (NTO) anodes. They unveiled an ultra-fast charging electric bus prototype powered by this new technology at CBMM’s industrial plant in Araxá, Brazil. This marks the first operation of an e-vehicle with NTO anodes, setting the stage for battery commercialization by Spring 2025.

High Performance and Efficiency

The new NTO battery allows the bus to achieve an ultra-fast charge time of just 10 minutes while delivering high energy density. Volkswagen Truck & Bus, Brazil, developed the prototype, which will undergo extensive testing at CBMM’s plant. These tests will provide critical data on battery performance and vehicle operation, ensuring readiness for commercial applications.

The partnership between Toshiba, Sojitz, and CBMM began in June 2018 with a joint agreement to explore NTO’s potential. In September 2021, they expanded their collaboration to include mass production processes. By August 2023, the companies signed a comprehensive sales and marketing agreement to establish a robust supply chain and promote global sales. This May, they further solidified their cooperation with a memorandum of understanding, emphasizing supply chain strength and business promotion.

Toshihiko Takaoka, Vice President of Toshiba’s Battery Division, expressed satisfaction with the E-bus equipped with the NTO battery. He highlighted the battery’s quick recharge and high energy density, noting that Toshiba will continue to expand its SCiB™ battery lineup.

Koichi Yamaguchi, Senior Managing Executive Officer at Sojitz, emphasized the NTO battery’s potential to revolutionize electric mobility. He noted Sojitz’s role in supply chain management and business development, leveraging their global sales networks.
