State Pensioners Can Offset £300 Winter Fuel Payment Loss with Energy Bill Savings

With changes to the Winter Fuel Payment eligibility this winter, millions of state pensioners will no longer qualify for the £300 support unless they receive means-tested benefits. However, pensioners can potentially make up for the loss by adopting simple strategies to reduce their energy bills.

Switch Energy Providers for Lower Costs

Greg Marsh, CEO of energy-saving platform Nous.co, advises pensioners to switch energy providers to save on bills. He noted that most households are currently out of contract and could benefit from lower rates. “The majority can save close to £150 on their energy bills without committing to a fixed deal,” Marsh stated.

Adjust Heating Habits to Cut Bills

In addition to switching providers, pensioners can save by lowering their thermostat settings. Reducing the thermostat by just one degree can result in substantial savings over the winter months. This simple adjustment could further reduce energy bills by up to £150, helping to offset the loss of the Winter Fuel Payment.

By making these changes, pensioners could effectively save around £300, matching the amount of the Winter Fuel Payment they may no longer receive.
