Sembcorp Solar Secures Singapore Government’s Largest Solar Project Contract

Sembcorp Solar Wins JTC Tender for 117 MWp Solar Project on Jurong Island

Sembcorp Solar Singapore, a wholly-owned unit of Sembcorp, has been awarded a significant contract by JTC for a groundbreaking 60-hectare solar project on Jurong Island. This project, comprising approximately 84 football fields of vacant land and the rooftops of five JTC buildings, including the Jurong Island Checkpoint and Jurong Rock Caverns facilities, is set to generate an impressive 117 megawatt-peak (MWp) of solar power.

Paving the Way for Environmental Impact and Solar Adoption on Jurong Island

This initiative marks the largest solar project by capacity ever awarded by a public-sector agency in Singapore. The project aims to boost Jurong Island’s total solar generation capacity from 25.2 MWp to 142.2 MWp, an amount capable of powering over 33,400 four-room HDB flats annually while reducing carbon emissions by more than 63,220 tonnes per year.

Timeline and Innovative Solutions for a Sustainable Future

The solar deployment is scheduled for completion in the second half of 2024, with the majority of the electricity exported to the national grid. JTC and Sembcorp Solar plan to develop a virtual power plant solution for Jurong Island, integrating data from solar and energy storage systems. This technology will enable real-time data monitoring, analytics, and optimization of energy assets, enhancing the efficiency and flexibility of the main grid.

Mr. Tan Chee Kiat, JTC’s Chief Sustainability Officer, highlighted the collective effort to promote solar adoption on Jurong Island. Currently, 20 companies on the island have adopted solar energy, and the recent tender will further support 12 additional companies in meeting their solar needs. Through JTC’s SolarRoof program, these companies can install solar panels with zero upfront capital outlay, contributing to the target of producing 900 MWp through solar power by 2030.

Mr. Tan emphasized JTC’s commitment to exploring innovative strategies for energy resource management and carbon emission reduction on Jurong Island, aligning with the Singapore Green Plan 2030.
