RWE Expands U.S. Development Portfolio with New Project Acquisitions Across Three States

Solar Energy and Energy Storage Projects to Drive Growth

RWE Clean Energy continues to enhance its renewable energy development pipeline in the U.S. The company has acquired 599 megawatts (MW) of solar and energy storage projects from Galehead Development, LLC (Galehead). This acquisition strengthens RWE’s position in the Pacific Northwest and expands its footprint in New York.

Key Solar and Energy Storage Projects

RWE’s latest acquisitions include significant projects in PacifiCorp’s territory in the Pacific Northwest and a development asset in New York:

  • Cedar Ridge: A 300 MW solar project paired with a 150 MW (600 MWh) energy storage asset in Blaine County, Idaho. This project will meet growing energy demands and provide regional grid support, aligning with PacifiCorp’s resource planning forecasts.
  • Remington: A 199 MW, 4-hour (796 MWh) standalone battery energy storage system (BESS) in Marion County, Oregon. It will deliver flexible clean power, responding to regional demand fluctuations with minimal land use impact.
  • Champlain: A 100 MW solar PV project in Washington County, New York. This project will cater to the increasing demand in the NYISO market, reinforcing RWE’s commitment to clean energy in New York.

Hanson Wood, Head of Development for RWE Clean Energy, expressed excitement about the acquisitions, highlighting the potential for job creation and economic growth in the local communities of Washington, Blaine, and Marion counties.

Strategic Expansion and Market Impact

John Clifford, Chief Revenue Officer for Galehead Development, LLC, emphasized the significance of the transaction, validating Galehead’s efforts in navigating complex development environments. He looks forward to building on the partnership with RWE.

RWE currently has a 36 gigawatt (GW) pipeline of onshore wind, solar, and battery energy storage systems in the U.S. The company aims to grow its renewables portfolio from over 9 GW net installed capacity to more than 19 GW net by 2030.

Growing Green in the U.S.

RWE is a leading renewable energy company globally, with the U.S. playing a crucial role in its Growing Green strategy. The company plans to expand its global green technology capacity to over 65 GW by 2030, with 30% of this capacity in the U.S.

With over 15 years in the U.S. renewables business, RWE has a strong track record in developing, constructing, and operating renewable energy facilities. The company operates a 9 GW portfolio of onshore wind, solar, and battery storage, making it the fourth-largest renewable energy company in the U.S. and the second-largest solar owner and operator.

RWE Offshore Wind Holdings is also developing offshore wind projects on both the east and west coasts of the U.S., including its first commercial-scale floating wind project. As part of RWE Group’s global strategy, the company plans to invest EUR 55 billion from 2024 to 2030, with about EUR 20 billion earmarked for the U.S. This investment is supported by a robust project pipeline of 36 GW in onshore wind, solar, and battery storage, and 6 GW of offshore wind.

In conclusion, RWE’s strategic acquisitions and ongoing investments in solar energy, energy storage, and renewable technologies underscore its commitment to driving the clean energy transition in the U.S. These efforts align with broader energy market trends and green energy policies, ensuring a sustainable and competitive future for renewable energy in the country.
