Rio Tinto Drives Australia’s Largest Solar Farm Project in Gladstone

Rio Tinto is set to propel the development of Australia’s most extensive solar power initiative near Gladstone, with plans to purchase all electricity from the 1.1GW Upper Calliope Solar Farm. This move aligns with Rio Tinto’s commitment to reducing global Scope 1 & 2 carbon emissions by half within this decade.

Power Purchase Agreement for 25 Years

In a groundbreaking power purchase agreement (PPA) with European Energy Australia, Rio Tinto secures exclusive rights to all power generated by the Upper Calliope solar farm for the next 25 years. The project, located approximately 50 kilometers southwest of Gladstone, is poised to contribute significantly to Rio Tinto’s climate goals.

Lowering Carbon Emissions and Repowering Operations

Pending development and grid connection approvals, the Upper Calliope solar farm has the potential to cut Rio Tinto’s operating carbon emissions by an impressive 1.8 million tonnes per year. The move marks a crucial step in repowering Rio Tinto’s Gladstone operations, including the Boyne aluminum smelter, Yarwun alumina refinery, and Queensland Alumina refinery.

Championing Sustainable Industry in Central Queensland

Rio Tinto’s CEO, Jakob Stausholm, expressed optimism about the agreement, emphasizing its importance in the journey to repower Gladstone operations sustainably. While challenges persist, the company is actively collaborating with stakeholders, including the Queensland and Australian governments, to achieve a competitive, firmed power solution.

Upper Calliope Solar Farm Details

Construction of the Upper Calliope plant, slated to begin in 2025 or 2026 upon approvals, aims to supply approximately 5% of Queensland’s current electricity demand when completed. The 2400-hectare facility will provide jobs for 1000 individuals during construction and support 100 direct and indirect jobs during operation.

Paving the Way for a Greener Future

Upper Calliope is the inaugural successful applicant in Rio Tinto’s formal Request for Proposals for renewable power and firming projects in Central and Southern Queensland. Rio Tinto remains committed to exploring additional proposals, solutions, and partnerships to meet the energy needs of its Gladstone production assets, driving a sustainable and energy-efficient future for Australia.
