Renewable energy sources, including solar and wind power, accounted for a record 30% of global electricity generation in 2023, reveals the Global Electricity Review 2024 by energy think tank Ember.
The Surge of Renewable Energy
The report underscores 2023 as a pivotal year for the power sector, potentially marking the peak of emissions and the onset of declining fossil fuel generation globally. Solar energy emerged as a frontrunner, outpacing coal in new electricity generation. Dave Jones, Ember’s Global Insights Programme director, asserts that the renewable energy future has become a reality, particularly with solar energy’s accelerated growth surpassing expectations.
China’s Role in Renewable Growth
China played a significant role in driving global renewable energy expansion, contributing 51% to additional solar generation and 60% to new wind generation in 2023, according to Katye Altieri, an analyst at Ember.
Bruce Douglas, CEO of the Global Renewables Alliance, emphasizes the transition to renewable energy, leading to reduced fossil fuel generation and emissions. He stresses the need for countries to fulfill commitments to sustainable development goals for further renewable energy growth.
Long-Term Planning for Sustainable Development
Planning for clean energy development is crucial, notes Altieri, as it not only ensures energy access for millions but also creates green job opportunities and mitigates climate change impacts on nature and communities.
The Global Electricity Review 2024 offers comprehensive insights into the global power system, analyzing electricity data from 215 countries and regions. The review underscores the agreement at COP28 to triple global renewable capacity by 2030, aiming for a 60% renewable energy share worldwide and a significant emissions reduction.
