Renewable investment urged at COP28

International experts at the COP28 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Dubai emphasized China’s pivotal role in the global green transformation, citing its impressive achievements in the renewable energy sector. The experts called for increased overseas investments by Chinese companies to further propel the energy transition and address employment concerns in various nations.

China’s Dominance in Renewable Energy Development

During an event at the China Pavilion, Erik Solheim, former executive director of the UN Environment Programme, underscored China’s dominance in renewable energy development, with its solar power sector accounting for 80 percent of the global total. Solheim praised China’s leadership in hydropower, wind energy, electric batteries, electric cars, and buses, indicating a 98 percent share of the global electric bus market.

Indispensable Role in Global Green Transformation

Solheim stressed that China is indispensable for global green transformation, asserting that attempting to decouple from China would significantly impede progress. He highlighted the responsibility of Chinese companies to invest abroad, not merely export, given the global demand for job opportunities.

Acknowledgment of Achievements by International Energy Agency

Fatih Birol, executive director of the International Energy Agency, acknowledged China’s significant achievements in renewable energy development, particularly commending its role in lowering prices of clean energy equipment, benefitting other nations.

Admiration for China’s Renewable Power Advancements

Jennifer Morgan, Germany’s special envoy for International Climate Action, expressed admiration for China’s renewable power advancements, noting that China’s capacity for renewable energy is over ten times that of Germany. China’s National Energy Administration reported that the installed capacity of renewable energy in China exceeded 1.3 billion kilowatts by June, surpassing coal-fired power for the first time.

Surpassing 2030 Targets Ahead of Schedule

Morgan highlighted China’s ability to surpass its 2030 targets for wind and solar well ahead of schedule, reinforcing its standing as a global powerhouse for renewables. The experts collectively emphasized the critical role China plays in driving global efforts towards sustainable and renewable energy solutions.
