Renewable Energy Illuminates 75 Tribal Houses in Hunsur: A Sustainable Power Initiative

Empowering Tribal Villages with Solar and Biodiesel Solutions

In a commendable initiative, 75 tribal houses in Lakshmanapura and Billenahosahalli villages, Hunsur taluk, Mysuru district, will soon be lit up with solar and biodiesel-generated power. The Centre for Renewable Energy and Sustainable Technologies (CREST), National Institute of Engineering (NIE), has successfully implemented this transformative project.

Cost-Effective and Sustainable Power Supply

Head and Chief Coordinator of CREST-NIE, Mr. Shamsundar Subbarao, revealed that a portable microgrid power plant would electrify the houses. Costing ₹30 lakh, the project ensures 24×7 power supply, surpassing the calculated 4kw load with a robust 6kw power output. Two tribal members are being trained for maintenance and operations.

A Carbon-Neutral Approach to Rural Electrification

Funded by Ashraya Hastha Trust, Bengaluru, with ₹30 lakh financial assistance, the project aligns with CREST’s mission to promote renewable energy devices. The initiative addresses the need for innovative solutions in tribal hamlets, enhancing safety through carbon-neutral energy generation. The microgrid, designed as a hybrid system, integrates solar, wind, and biodiesel components for efficient power supply.

The project, conceptualized and executed by NIE-CREST, is set for inauguration this month, marking a significant stride towards sustainable, self-sufficient power solutions for tribal communities.
