In a groundbreaking advancement, researchers led by Professor Sung-Yeon Jang at UNIST have unveiled the world’s most efficient quantum dot (QD) solar cell, achieving an impressive 18.1% efficiency. This development marks a significant stride towards the commercialization of next-generation solar cells.
Novel Ligand Exchange Technique
The research team employed a novel ligand exchange technique, introducing organic cation-based perovskite quantum dots (PQDs). This approach enhances stability and suppresses internal defects in the photoactive layer, contributing to the remarkable efficiency. Professor Jang highlighted that this achievement represents the highest efficiency among quantum dot solar cells acknowledged by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in the United States.
Promise of Quantum Dots
Quantum dots (QDs), semiconducting nanocrystals, gained Nobel recognition in Chemistry last year for their advanced nanotechnology. The focus on PQDs lies in their exceptional photoelectric properties. Unlike inorganic PQDs, the organic counterparts offer a streamlined manufacturing process, eliminating the need for substrate growth.
Overcoming Challenges
Utilizing an alkyl ammonium iodide-based ligand exchange strategy, the team successfully addressed challenges associated with defects in organic PQDs during the substitution process. The breakthrough resulted in a significant efficiency boost from 13% to 18.1%, with the solar cells maintaining stability even after over two years of storage.
Future Implications
First author Sang-Hak Lee emphasized the study’s impact on revolutionizing QD solar cell material research, opening new possibilities for organic PQDs. Professor Jang hailed the ligand exchange method as a catalyst for future advancements in the field.
Published in Nature Energy on January 27, 2024, this research was made possible through the support of the National Research Foundation of Korea and various funding programs, showcasing the global significance of the study in advancing solar technology.
