Punjab’s Push for Solar Agriculture
In a significant move towards harnessing solar energy for agricultural purposes, Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA) aims to provide 90,000 new solar pumps to farmers across the state. This initiative aligns with Chief Minister S. Bhagwant Singh Mann’s vision to optimize solar energy usage and decarbonize the agriculture sector.
Phased Deployment Strategy
Under the first phase, 20,000 agriculture solar pump-sets will be distributed, followed by the allocation of the remaining 70,000 pumps in the second phase. Notably, these solar pumps will be prioritized for farmers employing sprinkler and drip irrigation systems in dark zones to conserve water resources effectively.
Subsidized Access to Solar Pumps
Farmers will benefit from a substantial 60 percent subsidy on solar pump installations, making the transition towards renewable energy more economically viable. This subsidy aims to encourage widespread adoption of solar technology among agricultural communities.
Solar Energy in Education
Responding to inquiries about solar energy integration in educational institutions, Punjab’s New and Renewable Energy Sources Minister, Mr. Aman Arora, highlighted ongoing efforts. Already, 15 solar rooftop PV panels, totaling 75 KW capacity, have been installed in Government Schools within the Sanaur Constituency. Further installations are planned pending funding approvals.
Extensive Solar Infrastructure
Punjab is actively expanding its solar infrastructure beyond agriculture and education sectors. Currently, 3355 rooftop solar power plants with a total capacity of 19.784 MW adorn various government and semi-government institutions, including hospitals and schools. Additionally, 1.8 MW capacity SPV plants are underway for installation in 317 schools.
In conclusion, Punjab’s commitment to solar energy adoption reflects a broader initiative towards sustainable development and energy independence. Through subsidized solar pump schemes and widespread infrastructure deployment, the state aims to revolutionize its agricultural landscape while contributing to national renewable energy targets.
