Punjab Launches Solar Energy Initiative: 20,000 Solar Pumps for Agriculture Sector

The Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA) has announced an ambitious plan to promote solar energy in the state’s agricultural sector. The agency is inviting applications for 20,000 solar pumps (both surface and submersible) dedicated to agricultural use, offering farmers a sustainable and cost-effective solution for irrigation.

Application Details and Subsidies

Farmers interested in installing solar pumps can apply online at www.pmkusum.peda.gov.in from September 9th to September 30th, 2024. The available solar pump capacities range from 3 to 10 HP, catering to diverse farming needs. To encourage adoption, the Punjab government is offering substantial subsidies—60% for General category farmers and 80% for Scheduled Caste (SC) farmers. Notably, 2,000 solar pumps are reserved for SC farmers, while another 3,000 are allocated for Gram Panchayats, ensuring that marginalized communities also benefit from this green energy initiative.

Eligibility Criteria and Targeted Zones

In a move to optimize water usage, the solar pumps in over-exploited groundwater areas (dark zones) will be allocated to farmers already using micro-irrigation systems, such as drip or sprinkler irrigation. Additionally, farmers and Panchayats currently relying on diesel pumps to draw water from village ponds, farm ponds, or canal water diggies are also eligible under this scheme. However, farmers with existing PSPCL electric motor connections or those who have already installed solar pumps in their or their family members’ names are not eligible to apply.

This initiative aligns with the broader green energy policies of the Punjab government, aiming to boost solar energy investments and adoption in the state’s agricultural sector. For more details and to apply, farmers can visit www.pmkusum.peda.gov.in.
