Punjab Government to Provide 50,000 Free Solar Power Systems to Low-Income Consumers

In a bid to alleviate the financial burden on low-income households grappling with inflated power bills, the Punjab government has announced plans to distribute one-kilowatt (KW) solar power systems to 50,000 protected consumers free of charge.

Government Initiative: Bill Bijli Sey Nijat, Roshni k Saath

Under the initiative titled “Bill Bijli Sey Nijat, Roshni k Saath” (Freedom from Electricity Bill with Light), Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has approved the provision of solar power systems to economically vulnerable households. This move aligns with the government’s commitment to promoting clean, sustainable, and cost-effective energy solutions.

Technical Details and Implementation

During a special meeting, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif instructed officials to expedite the implementation of the solar power initiative. In the initial phase, protected consumers consuming up to 100 units of electricity will be eligible for the solar power systems, with plans to expand the program gradually.

Features of the Solar Power Systems

Each consumer will receive a 1KW solar power system comprising two solar panels, a lithium-ion battery, an inverter, and necessary wiring. This system is capable of powering lights, fans, small motors, and provides up to 16 hours of backup power.

Emphasis on Quality and Efficiency

CM Maryam emphasized the importance of utilizing the latest technology and ensuring the highest quality standards for the solar power systems. She directed authorities to procure the best quality solar panels, inverters, batteries, and other components to maximize efficiency and durability.

Key Attendees and Stakeholders

The meeting was attended by senior government officials including Senior Provincial Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb, Information Minister Azma Zahid Bukhari, Senator Pervaiz Rasheed, and relevant department heads. The collective efforts aim to swiftly implement the solar power initiative for the benefit of low-income consumers across Punjab.

The “Bill Bijli Sey Nijat, Roshni k Saath” initiative reflects Punjab’s commitment to providing accessible and sustainable energy solutions to its citizens, thereby contributing to the region’s socio-economic development and environmental sustainability.
