Punjab’s New and Renewable Energy Sources Minister, Mr. Aman Arora, announced on Friday that the state government has reserved 5,000 solar pumps specifically for Scheduled Caste (SC) farmers and Gram Panchayats for agricultural purposes. This initiative is part of the state’s broader effort to harness solar energy and decarbonize the agriculture sector.
20,000 Solar Pumps to be Installed Under PM Kusum Scheme
The Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA) is set to launch a scheme to install 20,000 solar pumps (both Surface and Submersible) in the initial phase of the PM Kusum Scheme. Of these, 2,000 solar pump sets have been reserved for SC farmers, who will receive an 80% subsidy on the total installation cost. Additionally, 3,000 solar pumps have been earmarked for Gram Panchayats. General category farmers will benefit from a 60% subsidy on the installation cost.
Emphasizing Transparent and Seamless Execution
Mr. Aman Arora highlighted the Punjab government’s commitment, led by Chief Minister S. Bhagwant Singh Mann, to maximizing the use of solar energy in agriculture to reduce carbon emissions. He directed PEDA officials to ensure that the implementation of the solar agri-pump project is carried out in a transparent and efficient manner.
Streamlined Application Process for Farmers
To facilitate the application and allotment process, PEDA has developed an online portal with the help of the Department of Governance Reforms (DGR). The portal’s operations were reviewed by Mr. Arora and department Secretary Mr. Ravi Bhagat. They emphasized the importance of ensuring that farmers encounter no difficulties while applying for solar pumps through the platform, aiming for a smooth and user-friendly experience.
