Power Division Dismisses Reports of Taxing Solar Power Users

Clarification from the Ministry of Energy’s Power Division

The Ministry of Energy’s Power Division (MEPD) has refuted recent claims regarding the imposition of a fixed tax on solar power consumers. According to state-run Radio Pakistan, the Power Division has debunked rumors circulating about potential taxation on residential and commercial users of solar energy.

Dismissal of Tax Proposal

Contrary to social media speculation, the Central Power Purchasing Agency did not advocate for a Rs2,000 per kilowatt tax on solar power users. The Power Division asserted that no such proposal was submitted to the government, emphasizing the absence of truth in these reports.

Focus on Promoting Alternative Energy

The Power Division highlighted the significance of the Net Metering Policy of 2017, aimed at fostering the adoption of alternative energy sources within the energy system. While acknowledging a rapid increase in solarization, the division emphasized ongoing considerations for proposals and amendments to alleviate burdens on consumers.

Commitment to Consumer Protection

Addressing concerns about the impact on consumers, the Power Division reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the interests of approximately 150,000 to 200,000 net metering consumers. Efforts are underway to ensure the protection of investments and prevent undue financial strain on vulnerable segments of society.

The dismissal of reports regarding the taxation of solar power users underscores the government’s dedication to promoting renewable energy initiatives and protecting consumer interests. As discussions continue to evolve, stakeholders remain focused on facilitating the sustainable growth of the solar energy market while prioritizing affordability and accessibility for all consumers.
