Portugal Faces 1.2% Rise in Greenhouse Gas Emissions Amidst Record-High Temperatures

Greenhouse Gas Increase

Preliminary estimates from the National Statistics Institute (INE) reveal a concerning 1.2% rise in Portugal’s greenhouse gas emissions in 2022 compared to the previous year.

Sector-Wise Impact

The surge is primarily attributed to elevated emissions in the energy sector, experiencing a notable 2.1% increase. Industrial processes and product use also contributed with a 0.5% rise.

Record-High Temperatures

INE’s data for 2022 highlights it as the “hottest year in the last 92 years,” registering an average air temperature of 16.64 ºC. This alarming temperature spike adds urgency to Portugal’s environmental challenges.
