PM Modi Foresees IEA Advancements with India’s Pivotal Role in Energy Landscape

Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted India’s accelerated economic growth and its significant contributions to global sustainability during the Ministerial Meeting of the International Energy Agency (IEA). Modi emphasized India’s commitment to combat climate change, exceeding Paris Climate commitments ahead of schedule.

India’s Economic and Environmental Milestones

India, now the world’s fastest-growing major economy, has transformed from the 11th-largest to the fifth-largest economy in a decade. PM Modi noted a remarkable 26-fold increase in solar energy capacity and a doubling of renewable energy capacity during the same period.

Despite hosting 17% of the world’s population, India’s carbon emissions constitute only 4% of the global total, underlining the nation’s dedication to environmental responsibility.

Inclusivity and Innovation for Global Impact

PM Modi stressed the importance of inclusivity in enhancing institutional credibility and capability, citing India’s 1.4 billion citizens who contribute talent, technology, and innovation. India has previously spearheaded initiatives like the International Solar Alliance and Our Mission Life, promoting pro-planet lifestyle choices.

IEA’s Strategic Direction and Global Energy Landscape

Expressing gratitude for IEA’s 50th Anniversary, PM Modi anticipates the agency’s enhanced influence with India’s expanded role. The IEA Ministerial Meeting in Paris gathers energy and climate ministers globally to assess energy market developments, policies, and transitions. Crucial issues include energy security risks, geopolitical tensions, and efforts following the COP28 climate change conference.

This milestone event reflects on the IEA’s evolution since its founding in 1974, initially focused on oil supply security and now central to the global dialogue on energy security and clean energy transitions. The 2024 IEA Ministerial Meeting serves as a platform to address current challenges and set the strategic direction for the future.
