New York Chooses Ørsted and Eversource for Updated Sunrise Wind Offshore Wind Farm
In a pivotal move towards advancing sustainable energy, Ørsted and Eversource have won the bid for an updated Sunrise Wind offshore wind farm in New York. This conditional award, a 924-megawatt project, marks a significant step closer to contributing substantial economic benefits and aiding New York in achieving its climate objectives.
Strengthening Offshore Wind Portfolio
The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) has chosen Ørsted and Eversource to negotiate a new 25-year contract for the Sunrise Wind project. This project, part of the offshore wind portfolio reset, aligns with New York’s ambitious goals for offshore wind energy.
Key Milestones and Anticipated Operational Date
Sunrise Wind is set to commence the finalization of agreements with NYSERDA on the Offshore Wind Renewable Energy Certificates (OREC) contract. Anticipated to be operational in 2026, the project aims to start full-scale construction once it secures all federal permits, expected this summer. The final investment decision is projected in Q2 2024.
Industry Voices and Economic Impact
David Hardy, Group EVP and CEO Americas at Ørsted, expresses readiness to build on the success of New York’s first offshore wind project, South Fork Wind. This includes delivering more jobs, local supply chain investments, and renewable power for New Yorkers. Eversource Energy Chairman, President, and CEO Joe Nolan express gratitude for the support of the Hochul Administration and see Sunrise Wind as a major step towards a clean energy future.
Community Investments and Project Advancements
Sunrise Wind commits substantial investments, including a $200 million offshore wind supply chain award to Long Island-based contractor Haugland Energy Group LLC. The project also supports the development of New York’s National Offshore Wind Training Center on Long Island with a $10 million investment.
