Origin Boosts Green Portfolio with Acquisition of Two Projects in NSW Renewable Energy Zone

Origin Energy has solidified its commitment to expanding its green energy portfolio by acquiring two early-stage projects in the New South Wales (NSW) Renewable Energy Zone (REZ). The deal includes the purchase of Walcha Energy, the developer behind the Ruby Hills wind project and the Salisbury solar project.

Strategic Move in the New England REZ

Origin’s latest acquisitions align with its proposed wind farm site on the recently acquired Warrane property, demonstrating confidence in the NSW government-designated New England REZ. Greg Jarvis, Origin’s Head of Energy Supply and Operations, emphasized the promising wind and solar resources within the New England REZ.

The combined capacity of the Ruby Hills wind farm and the Salisbury solar farm is an impressive 1300 megawatts, contributing significantly to Origin’s goal of increasing its clean energy capacity.

Navigating Post-Brookfield Deal Collapse

Following the collapse of the proposed takeover by Canada’s Brookfield and US-based EIG, Origin faced scrutiny from institutional investors. To address concerns, Origin’s CEO, Frank Calabria, underscored the company’s ambition to lead the transition to low-carbon energy.

Calabria mentioned ongoing investments, such as batteries at the Eraring and Mortlake generation sites, as part of Origin’s strategy. The initial target of adding four gigawatts of clean energy capacity by 2030 is now considered a starting point, reflecting the evolving landscape.

Community Engagement and Environmental Impact

Origin is committed to engaging with landowners and the local community. The company will conduct technical research to inform the development of plans to lodge a New South Wales environmental impact statement, emphasizing a transparent and environmentally responsible approach.

With this strategic move, Origin Energy reinforces its position in the evolving renewable energy landscape and advances its commitment to a sustainable energy future.
