Advancing Renewable Energy Initiatives
Ngarluma Aboriginal Corporation (NAC) and Rio Tinto have agreed to develop an 80MW solar farm on Ngarluma Country, near Karratha. This project aims to supply renewable energy to Rio Tinto’s iron ore operations in Western Australia’s Pilbara region.
Significant Solar Technology Development
The solar farm is the first joint project under a memorandum of understanding signed by Ngarluma people and Rio Tinto to explore renewable energy opportunities on Ngarluma Country. Located next to Rio Tinto’s Yurralyi Maya Power Station, the project could displace up to 11% of the natural gas used for power generation across Rio Tinto’s integrated mining operations in the Pilbara. This would reduce Rio Tinto’s emissions by up to 120kT CO2e annually.
Future Solar Energy Investments
A feasibility study is set for completion in early 2025, with project commissioning expected in 2027, subject to approvals and final investment decisions. Rio Tinto estimates that 600MW to 700MW of renewable energy will be required by 2030 to replace most gas usage in its Pilbara power network. Additional renewable energy will support fleet electrification, anticipated after 2030.
Commitment to Sustainability and Community
Rio Tinto Managing Director Rail, Port & Core Services Richard Cohen expressed pride in progressing the project with the Ngarluma people. He highlighted the importance of reducing emissions and creating economic opportunities, emphasizing the strong relationship with the Ngarluma people and commitment to sustainability.
Ngarluma Aboriginal Corporation CEO Ljuba Mojovic also lauded the collaboration with Rio Tinto, noting the potential for sustainable revenue, increased contracting opportunities, and positive environmental impact in the Pilbara. This project reflects the enduring partnership and shared commitment to a sustainable future.
This significant investment in solar energy underscores the growing trend toward renewable energy projects, highlighting the role of green energy policies and solar energy investment in reducing emissions and fostering economic opportunities in the energy market.
