New Solar Energy and Energy Storage Developments in Texas
National Grid Renewables announced the commencement of commercial operations at its Copperhead Solar and Storage Project in Falls County, Texas. This initiative expands the company’s clean energy footprint within the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) market. The Copperhead project, which began construction in fall 2022, includes a 150-megawatt (MW) solar facility and a 100-megawatt hour (MWh) energy storage system.
Economic Impact and Community Benefits
Copperhead is projected to deliver $25 million in direct economic benefits, including $12 million in new tax revenue over its first 25 years of operation. Furthermore, National Grid Renewables will contribute $600,000 through the Copperhead Community Fund to support three volunteer fire departments and a youth athletic organization in Falls County, Texas.
Blake Nixon, President of National Grid Renewables, emphasized the company’s commitment to the economic welfare of local communities. “We continue to grow our renewable energy portfolio within Texas and remain dedicated to contributing positively to the economic well-being of the communities where we operate,” Nixon said. “Copperhead signifies this commitment, and we look forward to being good neighbors and partners with the Lonestar state and its residents.”
Environmental Benefits and Emission Reductions
Copperhead will also provide substantial environmental benefits. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) greenhouse gas equivalencies calculator, the project is estimated to offset 250,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually. This reduction is equivalent to removing 55,000 cars from the road for one year.
Jay T. Elliott, Falls County Judge, expressed gratitude for the project’s community support. “Falls County is grateful for all the support from National Grid Renewables, which has provided an invaluable resource to our community through the Copperhead Charitable Fund,” Elliott said. “The county can now provide additional services and personnel that would not be possible without the Copperhead Solar & Storage project.”
