Mumbai’s BEST Fleet Set to Go Green: All-Electric Buses by 2027, Announces Minister Samant

Ambitious Transition to Clean Energy

Maharashtra’s Industry Minister, Uday Samant, revealed plans for the Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) fleet to be exclusively powered by clean energy, predominantly electric, by 2027.

Significant Tender Milestones Achieved

Samant disclosed that BEST has successfully completed the tendering process for 3,000 electric buses and an additional 200 buses fueled by compressed natural gas (CNG). Notably, 900 of the electric buses will be double-deckers, while the CNG variants will be single-deckers.

Prioritizing Sustainability and Passenger Experience

BEST’s initiative aligns with its goal to transition the entire bus fleet to non-polluting fuel sources, emphasizing the commitment to passenger comfort and reducing Mumbai’s carbon footprint. Samant emphasized the surge in daily passengers, reaching 33 lakh in 2018-19, reinforcing the need for sustainable public transportation solutions.

The move signifies a strategic response to the rising demand for eco-friendly commuting options, establishing BEST as a pioneer in the transition to a cleaner and greener urban transport system.
