Modhera, Gujarat: India’s Pioneer Solar-Powered Village

Blending Tradition and Innovation

In the heart of Gujarat, Modhera emerges as India’s inaugural solar-powered village, a fusion of tradition and modernity. Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauds this harmonious balance between progress and environmental conservation.

Landmark Solar Initiative

Modhera, with a $9.7 million investment, has become the nation’s first village with uninterrupted solar power, symbolizing a paradigm shift in sustainable living. UN Secretary-General António Guterres praises Modhera as a symbol of “reconciliation between humankind and the planet.”

Socio-Economic Transformation

The solar project, a joint effort by the Union Government and the Government of Gujarat, has transformed lives. Residents experience substantial savings, ranging from 60 to 100 percent on power bills, marking a significant socio-economic upturn.

Innovative Solar Infrastructure

Encompassing 30 acres, Modhera’s solar infrastructure includes ground-mounted panels, rooftop installations, a 6 MW ground-mounted project, a 15 MW battery storage system, and 1 KW rooftop setups on over 1,300 houses. The surplus power generated is not only meeting villagers’ needs but also proving to be an avenue for income generation by selling excess power back to the grid.

Modhera’s journey to solar reliance not only exemplifies progress but also honors its traditional ties with the Sun Temple. As pioneers, the residents set a precedent for a future where renewable energy and environmental stewardship are integral.
