From Lengthy Approvals to Instantaneous Implementation
The cumbersome process of obtaining multiple approvals and significant expenses for rooftop solar installation is evolving. Shreya Mishra, CEO of Mumbai-based Solar Square, highlights the drastic change, stating, “We had to get 45 signatures to set up a small rooftop solar connection in 2021. Today it’s almost instantaneous.”
Urgency Amid Rising Energy Demands and Climate Vulnerability
With India becoming the world’s most populous nation and facing a surging demand for energy, the need for rapid growth in rooftop solar is paramount. Simultaneously, as a major emitter of planet-warming gases, India is highly vulnerable to climate change, experiencing deadly floods, extreme weather events, and cyclones.
Clean Power Growth and Rooftop Solar Lag
Despite India’s rapid growth in clean power, predominantly from solar farms, less than 15% is derived from rooftop arrays. India falls short of its 2022 target of 40 gigawatts, currently managing only 11 gigawatts of rooftop solar. The country ranks fourth globally in installed renewable power, following China, the U.S., and Brazil.
