India, the world’s third-largest solar power producer, is set to add 30 GW of solar capacity and 5 GW of wind capacity by March 2025, marking a record year for renewable energy growth. This comes after a slowdown in solar farm commissioning in recent years, which saw the slowest solar power growth in six years during the first half of 2024.
Current Renewable Capacity and Future Projections
India added 10 GW of renewable energy capacity between April and August 2024, bringing its total to approximately 153 GW. Bhupinder Singh Bhalla, the top official at India’s Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, indicated that the country is on track to surpass these numbers in the next fiscal year.
Challenges and Clean Energy Goals
India will need to increase its annual clean energy capacity by 30% to meet its ambitious target of 500 GW of non-fossil power capacity by 2030.
Financial and Industry Commitments
Indian financial institutions have pledged $386 billion to support renewable projects, and major companies like Reliance Industries and Adani Green Energy have committed to boosting renewable capacity by 100 GW and 38.8 GW, respectively, by 2030.
