Himachal Pradesh Aims to Save Rs 1,000 Crore Annually Through Solar Energy Revolution

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu unveils ambitious plans for renewable energy during the winter session of the 14th Vidhan Sabha.

Solar Energy Revolution

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has outlined a visionary plan for Himachal Pradesh to harness solar energy, potentially saving Rs 1,000 crore annually in electricity purchases. The government aims to achieve this by tapping into renewable energy sources, with a target of harnessing 500 MW of solar energy by December next year.

Significant Solar Projects

Sukhu announced the establishment of the state’s largest 32 MW solar power plant at Pekhuwala in Una district within the next four months. This initiative is a crucial step towards making Himachal a green energy state by 2026. The Chief Minister emphasized the government’s commitment to promoting renewable energy by offering a 50% subsidy on electric vehicle purchases and supporting youth through the Rajiv Gandhi Start-up Scheme.

Opposition’s Concerns

During the session, BJP members raised concerns about the government’s decision to cancel the 800 MW power projects and impose water cess. Sukhu accused the BJP of neglecting the state’s interests, asserting that the government aims to renegotiate terms with the SJVN for the Luhri-Sunni and Dhaula Siddh power projects.

Call to Strengthen Energy Production

Newly inducted Cabinet Minister Rajesh Dharmani stressed the importance of Himachal Pradesh strengthening its energy production to avoid purchasing electricity at high rates during the winter from other states. He emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach, including the exploitation of geo-thermal, biogas, and wind power on a large scale.

Opposition’s Response

Leader of the Opposition Jai Ram Thakur challenged the Chief Minister’s statements on water cess, stating that it applies to all states, not Himachal alone. BJP member Hansraj questioned the focus on solar energy, pointing out challenges such as waste disposal after 20 years. The winter session concluded without major confrontations, highlighting active participation from both ruling and opposition members in critical debates.

Himachal Pradesh is now poised to take a significant leap towards sustainability, green energy, and reduced electricity costs through its ambitious solar energy initiatives.
