Henan Province Surpasses Coal with 67 Million Kilowatts of Renewable Energy Capacity

Clean Energy Triumph in Central China

Installed Capacity Milestone: As of the close of 2023, central China’s Henan Province achieved a significant milestone with its installed renewable energy power generation capacity exceeding 67 million kilowatts. This marked the first instance of renewable energy surpassing coal power in the region, as reported by the State Grid Henan Electric Power Company.

Dominance of Renewable Energy

Power Generation Breakdown: Henan’s installed renewable energy power generation capacity now constitutes 48.7 percent of the province’s total installed power generation capacity. In contrast, coal power stands at 47.4 percent, accounting for 66.01 million kilowatts.

Soaring Renewable Electricity Production

Record Electricity Generation: In 2023 alone, Henan Province generated close to 100 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity from renewable sources. This represents a remarkable 21 percent year-on-year increase and constitutes about a quarter of the province’s total electricity consumption.

Transition from Coal to Clean Energy

Renewable Energy Initiatives: Traditionally reliant on coal, Henan has actively shifted its energy landscape by promoting clean alternatives. The province has embraced wind power, solar energy, biomass energy, and other initiatives, leading to a diversified and cleaner energy mix.

Henan’s achievement underscores the growing success of clean energy initiatives, positioning the province as a beacon for sustainable power generation in central China.
