Hanwha Aerospace and SK Enmove Unveil World’s First Immersion Cooling ESS, Leading Non-Flammable Battery Solutions

Hanwha Aerospace, in partnership with SK Enmove, has introduced the world’s first immersion cooling Energy Storage System (ESS), setting a new standard in non-flammable battery technology. The groundbreaking system was revealed at a technology briefing in Seoul, highlighting their innovative solution designed to enhance battery safety and support green energy storage.

Revolutionizing ESS Safety with Immersion Cooling

The new immersion cooling ESS uses cutting-edge thermal fluid technology to fully submerge lithium-ion battery cells, effectively preventing thermal runaway and improving safety by isolating each battery cell. Even in the event of a cell experiencing thermal failure, the system prevents propagation to other cells, offering superior protection compared to traditional air- and water-cooled ESS systems.

This non-flammable battery solution has already earned certifications from key institutions, including DNV and the Korean Register of Shipping (KR), reinforcing its reliability for both maritime and land-based applications.

“With our decades of experience in ESS design, we’ve developed the industry’s safest energy storage system,” said Seung-Hyun Son, Head of Energy Systems at Hanwha Aerospace. “Our immersion cooling technology will set the standard for future energy storage solutions, ensuring maximum fire prevention.”

SK Enmove’s Advanced Cooling Fluids

SK Enmove, the supplier of thermal fluids for the system, presented its advanced fluid technology at the event. Utilizing Group 3 base oil technology and proprietary additive formulations, the company maximized the system’s non-flammable properties.

“We are developing submersion cooling ESS for both marine and land-based applications, including data centers and electric vehicles,” said Sang-Hyuk Seo, Head of e-Fluids at SK Enmove. “Our goal is to become a global leader in immersion cooling technology.”

Leading the Way in Eco-Friendly Maritime Solutions

As Hanwha Aerospace continues its leadership in maritime ESS applications, it plans to further expand into eco-friendly maritime solutions by collaborating with Hanwha Ocean. This initiative is part of their strategy to build a sustainable energy value chain and enhance the competitiveness of Korea’s ESS sector globally.

This collaboration between Hanwha Aerospace and SK Enmove is set to redefine safety in energy storage and push the boundaries of non-flammable battery solutions for various industries.
