The Gulf Sriracha Power Plant, a collaboration between Thai Independent Power Provider Gulf Energy Development Company Limited and Mitsui & Co., Ltd, has been awarded the prestigious “Power Plant of the Year” at the Power and Energy Awards. The accolade acknowledges the plant’s effectiveness in addressing Thailand’s increasing energy needs and underscores its dedication to decarbonization in the nation’s energy transition.
Key Features of the Gulf Sriracha Power Plant
Situated in Thailand’s Chonburi province, the 2,650-megawatt gas turbine combined cycle (GTCC) power plant, initiated in 2018, features Mitsubishi Power’s cutting-edge J-Series Air-Cooled (JAC) gas turbine. This technology boasts a world-leading power generating efficiency of 64%, resulting in substantial fuel savings and carbon emission reductions. The gas turbines, known for their high reliability, surpassed 46,000 Actual Operating Hours (AOH).
Project Completion and Collaboration Efforts
Mitsubishi Power collaborated closely with the plant owners to ensure the project’s timely completion. By maintaining safety in site operations and implementing efficient measures such as rescheduling work sequences and remote supervision for installation and commissioning, all four gas turbines were successfully installed. Commercial operations for all four units commenced by October 2022, meeting the project’s schedule.
Akihiro Ondo, Managing Director and CEO of Mitsubishi Power Asia Pacific Pte. Ltd, expressed gratitude for the recognition, highlighting Mitsubishi Power’s commitment to ongoing enhancements and after-sales services.
Enlit Asia 2023 Power and Energy Awards
The award was presented during the Enlit Asia 2023 premier energy conference and exhibition. It recognizes outstanding power plant projects that exhibit successful project completion and innovative power generation technologies. A panel of 34 judges, including professionals, experts, and academics, conferred the award.
Future Plans and Collaborations
The Gulf Sriracha Power Plant is part of two 2,650 MW GTCC power plants developed by Mitsubishi Power under a full-turnkey engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) order from Gulf Group and Mitsui & Co. Ltd. A 25-year power purchase agreement with EGAT and a 25-year Long Term Service Agreement with Mitsubishi Power have been established to ensure the plant’s sustained performance and contribution to Thailand’s energy needs.
Mitsubishi Power and Gulf Energy Development have a history of successful collaboration, marked by earlier projects, reinforcing their commitment to meeting Thailand’s energy demands.
In summary, the Gulf Sriracha Power Plant stands as a testament to effective collaboration, innovative technologies, and a commitment to sustainability in Thailand’s evolving energy landscape.
