Gombe Government’s Solar Energy Spending Raises Questions

Gombe State’s Solar Energy Investments

Gombe State has allocated significant funds for solar energy projects in its 2024 budget. The state spent N242 million on a 60KVA solar-powered generator in the first quarter of the year. This figure exceeds the initial budget of N50 million for the project.

In the same budget, the state planned N200 million for a 100KVA solar generator. Overall, Gombe State earmarked N3.2 billion for generators in the 2024 fiscal year.

Discrepancies in Solar Generator Costs

Market research reveals a significant discrepancy between the government’s expenditure and market prices. Three companies specializing in solar energy provided cost estimates for a 60KVA solar generator. One quoted N15.6 million, another N30 million (including installation), and an Asian firm estimated N153 million, covering professional services, logistics, and safety allowances.

These figures are substantially lower than the N242 million spent by the Gombe government. Even including all additional services, the highest quote of N153 million leaves an excess of N89 million unaccounted for in the government’s expenditure.

Government Response Pending

The Gombe State budget report mentions the purchase of a single 60KVA solar generator for N242 million. SaharaReporters sought comments from Ismaila Uba, Director General of Press in the Gombe State government. Despite assurances of a response, no official comment has been received as of the report’s filing.

This spending disparity raises questions about the transparency and efficiency of Gombe State’s solar energy investments. The public awaits clarification on the substantial difference between government spending and market prices.
