Generac Secures $200 Million Grant to Enhance Puerto Rico’s Renewable Energy

Generac Power Systems (NYSE: GNRC) has received a significant grant of up to $200 million from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). This funding is part of the $1 billion Puerto Rico Energy Resilience Fund (PR-ERF), aimed at bolstering renewable energy infrastructure in Puerto Rico.

Solar Energy Access for Vulnerable Communities

Under the PR-ERF’s Programa Acceso Solar, Generac will install residential solar and battery storage systems for disadvantaged households in Puerto Rico. These installations, set to begin in August 2024, will provide clean and resilient energy to low-income areas and households with energy-dependent disabilities.

Generac’s local affiliates in Puerto Rico will collaborate to deliver reliable solar energy solutions, supporting the island’s goal of achieving 100% renewable energy by 2050. Residents interested in the program can find more information on the Programa Acceso Solar website.

Promoting Clean Energy and Job Creation

Generac’s President and CEO, Aaron Jagdfeld, highlighted the company’s long-standing commitment to providing reliable power solutions in Puerto Rico, especially after Hurricane Maria. The grant will further enable Generac to deliver efficient, sustainable power to underserved communities during outages.

Maria Robinson, Director of DOE’s Grid Deployment Office, emphasized the transformative impact of the Programa Acceso Solar on vulnerable households. The partnership with Generac aims to enhance energy resilience and affordability for those in greatest need.

Collaborations for Community and Workforce Development

Generac will partner with several organizations to implement the program:

  • PathStone: A nonprofit offering community and workforce development services in Puerto Rico since 1998.
  • Interstate Renewable Energy Council (IREC): A clean energy nonprofit leading community programs and market research.
  • FR-BLDM: A local contractor with extensive government program management experience.
  • Juapi Energy: A PWRcell installer and Generac Service Dealer providing service support and installations.
  • Palmetto: A climate technology company offering commercial software applications to facilitate the transition to solar and storage.

These collaborations aim to support local businesses, create jobs, and foster community development. Norm Taffe, President of Energy Technology at Generac, emphasized the importance of working with local installers and businesses to ensure high-quality, resilient power solutions and uplift the local economy.
