GCL SI and Ocean Sun Illuminate BOOST Floating Solar Demonstrator in Spain

GCL System Integration (GCL SI) and Ocean Sun have successfully completed the BOOST floating solar demonstrator, reaching a milestone with an installed capacity of 270 kWp. The project concluded on December 14, 2023, at the port of Tazacorte on La Palma, contributing to the sustainable energy transition of the region.

Innovative Floating Solar Technology

BOOST serves as a showcase for innovative floating solar photovoltaics (FPV) technology. The project features the utilization of GCL MS/60GT Ocean Sun PV modules designed to advance the capabilities of floating solar solutions. This collaboration marks the fifth year of partnership between GCL SI and Ocean Sun.

Long-Term Collaboration and Module Development

The collaboration, initiated in 2018, focuses on tailoring a PV module specifically for Ocean Sun’s membrane-based floating solar solution. GCL SI and Ocean Sun, along with independent research partners and institutes, have worked collaboratively to qualify and enhance the bankability of this new PV module installation technology.

Rigorous Testing Process

The joint efforts have involved a rigorous testing process, including immersion of panels in heated seawater under 1500V tension for an extended duration. The testing ensures the quality, durability, and resilience of the PV modules in marine conditions. The flat back surface design of the module optimizes contact with the membrane, enhancing cooling effects and overall system power output.

Affordability and Durability

The module, built with waterproof materials, offers long-lasting use in moisture-prone areas. Its frameless design reduces aluminum usage, cutting raw material costs by nearly 10%, contributing to affordability and durability in solar installations.

On-Site Support and Testing

GCL SI has actively provided on-site support throughout the project. The technical team from GCL SI will continue testing the panels to observe their performance in the face of larger waves and exposure to saltwater. This collaborative effort aims to gain valuable insights and further enhance the module’s resilience in challenging marine conditions.

History of Successful Collaboration

Ocean Sun and GCL SI have a history of successful collaboration, including previous projects such as the installation in Magat, Philippines, in 2019. Additionally, the two companies partnered on a significant 2 MWp FPV project at Banja dam in Albania, successfully commissioned in January 2023.

The completion of the BOOST floating solar demonstrator reinforces the commitment of GCL SI and Ocean Sun to advancing floating solar technology and supporting sustainable energy initiatives.
