Galway Schools Lead the Way in Green Energy Transition with Solar Panels Scheme

Galway schools are set to embrace sustainable energy practices as the government introduces a solar panel scheme. Under this initiative, schools will receive full funding for up to 16 solar panels on their roofs, fostering reduced energy costs and lower emissions.

Government’s Climate Action Fund in Action

Senator Pauline O’Reilly reveals details of the new solar energy scheme for schools, funded by the Department of the Environment’s Climate Action Fund. Eligible schools will be provided funding to install a six-kilowatt roof-mounted solar PV system.

Financial and Environmental Benefits for Schools

Participating schools, estimated at around 1,600 across 11 prioritized counties, including Galway, can potentially save €1,200 to €1,600 annually on energy bills. The surplus energy generated can be sold back to the grid, maximizing financial and environmental benefits.

Educational Opportunities and Monitoring Software

In addition to financial incentives, schools will receive monitoring software, enabling students and staff to track energy generation. The initiative aims to educate students about the value of solar energy, promoting sustainability in education.

Rollout and County Prioritization

Galway is among the first 11 counties prioritized for the phased rollout of the solar panel scheme. The initial phase invites schools in counties such as Clare, Donegal, Dublin City, Kerry, Kilkenny, Leitrim, Limerick, Offaly, Waterford, and Wicklow to participate.

Government Commitment to Green Education

Minister for Education Norma Foley and Minister of State at the Department of the Environment, Climate, and Communications, Ossian Smyth, officially launch the first phase of the Schools Photovoltaic Programme, reinforcing the government’s commitment to sustainable education.
