G20 Nations Urged to Collaborate for Energy Transition

Brazil’s Call for Recognition of Biofuels

Brazil’s Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, arrived at the G20 headquarters driving a hybrid car, emphasizing biofuels’ importance for decarbonization. He urges wealthy nations to acknowledge biofuels as crucial for transitioning to greener energy.

On April 15, Minister Silveira attended the Energy Transitions Working Group meeting at the G20 headquarters in Brasilia. Driving a hybrid car fueled by gasoline and ethanol, he underscored Brazil’s leadership in energy transition, emphasizing the country’s potential in renewable energies.

Respect for Technological Sovereignty

Silveira emphasized respecting each nation’s sovereignty in choosing technological pathways for energy transition. He highlighted the disparity between developed and developing nations, urging developed countries to engage in meaningful discussions about the energy transition and recognize biofuels’ role in decarbonization.

International Cooperation Essential

The minister stressed the need for global cooperation, emphasizing that carbon dispersion knows no borders. He pointed out that achieving the $4.5 trillion clean energy production target set at the DUBAI COP by 2030 depends on industrialized nations fulfilling the Copenhagen Accord, which mandates $100 billion in yearly clean energy investments from 2020.

Roadmap for Sustainable Fuels

Following the November G20 meeting, the Working Group aims to deliver a roadmap with policy guidelines to accelerate the development of sustainable fuels, including hydrogen and derivatives. The next meeting is scheduled for May 27-29 in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais.

Collaboration among G20 nations is crucial for driving global energy transition efforts. Minister Silveira’s call highlights the urgency of recognizing diverse energy sources and fostering international cooperation for a sustainable future.
