FirstEnergy Completes Fort Martin Solar Site, Paving the Way for West Virginia’s Renewable Energy Growth

FirstEnergy Corp.’s subsidiary, Mon Power, marked the start of the new year with the completion of its solar site at Fort Martin Power Station in Maidsville, West Virginia. The first of five planned solar sites, this achievement underscores West Virginia’s entry into a new era of energy diversity.

Solar Site Overview

Spanning approximately 80 acres, the Fort Martin solar site now houses nearly 50,000 solar panels capable of generating up to 18.9 megawatts (MW) of solar energy per hour. To put it in perspective, one MW of solar energy can power an average of 173 homes, according to the Solar Energy Industries Association.

Local Workforce and American-Made Equipment

Over 100 local union workers, primarily from Morgantown and Parkersburg areas, were employed for the Fort Martin solar site’s construction. The solar panels, racking systems, and supporting electrical equipment were proudly made in the United States.

Jim Myers, President of West Virginia Operations, emphasized the significance of utilizing local union workers and highlighted the economic benefits of renewable energy for the state.

Future Plans and Public Service Commission Approval

FirstEnergy’s overall plan includes a total of five solar sites expected to collectively generate up to 50 MW of renewable energy. The West Virginia Public Service Commission (PSC) approved the Fort Martin solar site, along with two others, in Rivesville and Marlowe. Construction for all sites is anticipated to conclude by the end of 2024.

The companies intend to seek final approval for the remaining two solar sites in Davis and Weirton later this year, aiming for completion by the end of 2025.
