Clean Energy Deal
First Solar, Inc. has signed a 15-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Cleantech Solar for 150 MW of photovoltaic (PV) solar and 16.8 MW of wind assets in Tamil Nadu, India. This will supply approximately 7.3 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of clean electricity to First Solar’s new 3.3-gigawatt vertically integrated solar manufacturing facility.
Environmental Impact and Benefits
When fully commissioned by Q3 2024, these assets are expected to provide 70% of the facility’s electricity needs, displacing nearly 7,000 kilotons of CO2 emissions over the PPA’s duration. Cleantech Solar will also procure 150 MW of India-made Series 7 thin film solar panels from First Solar.
Sustainable Manufacturing Facility
First Solar’s Tamil Nadu plant, the world’s first net-zero water withdrawal solar manufacturing facility, prioritizes responsible manufacturing. Designed to minimize water usage, it relies entirely on treated reverse osmosis water. The facility also houses India’s first PV solar recycling plant, contributing to closed-loop semiconductor recovery and environmental sustainability.
Strategic Collaboration for a Sustainable Future
Sachin Jain, CEO of Cleantech Solar, expressed delight in the partnership, emphasizing the collaboration’s extended benefits. The deal, one of India’s largest intra-state PPAs, aligns with Cleantech Solar’s commitment to delivering clean and cost-competitive power, bringing its total portfolio size in Tamil Nadu to nearly 500 MW.
This partnership signifies a step towards a greener and more sustainable future, showcasing First Solar’s dedication to responsible manufacturing and Cleantech Solar’s commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions.
