Government’s Push for Solar Energy in Interim Budget 2024
In the recently presented Interim Budget 2024, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman underscored the government’s commitment to assisting one crore households through the rooftop solarisation project. This initiative aims to provide access to up to 300 units of free electricity each month, aligning with the government’s focus on solar energy.
Dual Benefits for Households and the EV Charging Ecosystem
The rooftop solarisation project offers a dual advantage. Households stand to save Rs 15,000–18,000 annually, with the surplus electricity being sold to distribution organizations. Simultaneously, this move stimulates the EV charging ecosystem, opening avenues for suppliers to enter the market and offer installation services for EV chargers.
Empowering Youth with Technical Skills
The Finance Minister stated, “One crore households to obtain 300 units of free electricity every month through rooftop solarisation. Each household is expected to save Rs. 15,000 to Rs. 18,000 annually.” This initiative not only promotes clean energy but also empowers youth with technical skills in manufacturing, installing, and maintaining solar panels and EV chargers.
Positive Reception from Solar Industry
Industry leaders, including Ashwani Sehgal, President of the Indian Solar Manufacturers Association, welcomed the government’s commitment, noting the substantial opportunity for solar manufacturers. This move is seen as a game-changer for local job creation and environmental sustainability.
CEEW Analysis and Rooftop Solar Potential
Neeraj Kuldeep, Senior Programme Lead at the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW), highlighted the active role Indian citizens will play in the country’s energy transition. According to CEEW analysis, solarising 1 crore households could support 20-25 GW of rooftop solar capacity. This presents a nationwide opportunity, unlike utility-scale solar, contributing significantly to India’s climate commitments.
