ENGIE Boosts U.S. Energy Storage Capacity to Over 1.8 GW

ENGIE Amplifies U.S. Presence with Significant Battery Energy Storage Expansion

ENGIE has achieved a significant milestone by expanding its Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) capacity to over 1.8 gigawatts (GW) across the United States, marking a significant increase of 1 GW since January 2024. This expansion underscores ENGIE’s commitment to bolstering grid stability and enhancing the integration of renewable energies, confirming its leadership in the energy transition sector.

Strategic Acquisitions and Project Commissions Fuel Growth

The rapid growth in ENGIE’s BESS operations is largely driven by its strategic acquisition of Broad Reach Power in August 2023, an industry leader known for its innovative energy solutions. This acquisition has not only expanded ENGIE’s development project portfolio but also integrated cutting-edge technology and expertise into its operations. Currently, ENGIE operates 24 BESS projects across the U.S., including six commissioned this year alone.

David Carroll, Chief Renewables Officer and Senior VP at ENGIE North America, expressed pride in ENGIE’s role in enhancing grid reliability through battery storage. “Our ability to dispatch storage solutions during critical times, especially over this summer, has positioned ENGIE as a key player in maintaining grid balance and reliability,” said Carroll.

Enhanced Grid Stability and Renewable Integration

ENGIE’s portfolio includes stand-alone BESS projects ranging from 10 MW to 200 MW and co-located facilities with large solar projects, such as the 320 MW Five Wells Solar in Bell County, TX. These projects collectively provide around 1.8 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of dispatchable energy, ready to support the ERCOT and CAISO grids at a moment’s notice.

In addition to battery storage, ENGIE continues to grow its renewable energy footprint, with approximately 8 GW of solar and wind projects in various stages of operation or construction across North America. This harmonious blend of renewable energy sources and storage capacity is pivotal in driving ENGIE’s vision for a sustainable energy future.
