Energy Vault Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: NRGV), a leader in sustainable grid-scale energy storage, has reached significant milestones in China, confirming the successful interconnection of the Rudong EVx system with the China state grid. Simultaneously, construction has begun on three additional grid-scale EVx gravity energy storage systems (GESS) in the country. This is part of the company’s collaboration with partners China Tianying (CNTY) and Atlas Renewable, with a total capacity of 3.7 GWh across nine EVx GESS deployments.
Expansion Projects and Achievements
In 2023, partners CNTY and Atlas Renewable initiated multiple EVx projects, including a 17 MW/68 MWh EVx GESS in Zhangye City, Gansu Province, a 50 MW/200 MWh EVx in Ziuquan City, Jinta County, Gansu Province, and a 25 MW/100 MWh EVx in Huailai Cunrui Town, Zhangjiakou County, Hebei Province. These projects, announced under China’s National Energy Administration (NEA) as “new energy storage pilot demonstration projects,” will contribute to balancing China’s national energy grid through renewable energy storage.
Growing Adoption and Policy Recognition
The selection of Rudong and Zhangye City EVx systems as demonstration projects by China’s NEA showcases the increasing adoption of Energy Vault’s gravity energy storage technology. These projects align with China’s energy policies, requiring renewable energy plants to integrate storage of 20% of their nameplate generation capacity, with durations of at least 2–4 hours.
CEO and CTO Statements
Robert Piconi, Chairman and CEO of Energy Vault, expressed satisfaction with the growing adoption of their technology in China. Andrea Pedretti, Energy Vault’s CTO, commended China Tianying and partners for their technical expertise and local capabilities.
Project Details and Future Outlook
The Rudong EVx system, upon receiving final approvals, will become the world’s first commercial utility-scale non-pumped hydro gravity energy storage system.
