EDP’s Alqueva Project Awarded in Brussels for Renewable Energy Contribution
EDP, a leading energy company, received an esteemed award in Brussels for its groundbreaking floating solar project during the launch of “Sustainable Energy Week,” a significant event for renewable energies.
European Recognition for Pioneering Technology
The European Commissioner for Energy, Kadri Simson, presented the award to EDP, acknowledging not only the pioneering and innovative technology deployed but also the company’s substantial contribution to expanding renewable energies and advancing the energy transition.
Hybrid Solar Project Triumphs in Global Vote
Out of three finalists selected for the sustainable energy awards, EDP’s project secured victory through a global vote in June. The project, operational for approximately a year in Alqueva, integrates solar energy, hydroelectricity, and battery storage, showcasing scalable technology that reduces costs, emissions, and environmental impact.
Innovative Technology at Alqueva Dam Reservoir
The Alqueva project boasts a hybrid approach, combining solar energy, hydroelectricity, and battery storage on a floating solar power plant. This innovative system, developed within the Fresher project funded by the European Union, features 12,000 solar panels floating on four hectares of the Alqueva dam reservoir.
Impressive Regional Energy Supply
The floating solar plant, equipped with an elastic cable mooring system, supplies enough energy to meet 30% of the energy needs of families in the Alqueva region. This recognition highlights the success of EDP’s commitment to combining various renewable energy forms at a single connection point to the grid, providing an effective and sustainable solution.
